Changes to HTTP service for example domains

4 September 2024

The websites served on the example domains (e.g. example.com, example.net, example.org, and example.edu) no longer support POST, PUT, DELETE, and PATCH requests. Attempts for those HTTP request methods now return a 405 (Method Not Allowed) status code.

Software should not rely on the existence of this HTTP service. These websites are provided on a best-effort basis to inform users of the purpose of these domains. The service is not provided to be a testing endpoint for software, however we recognize that the domains may inadvertently be used such as through copying configurations from sample documentation. Users should not make any assumptions about the content, behavior, or availability of any services. Future changes to the example domains may be given without notice.

As described in RFC 2606 and RFC 6761, a number of domains such as example.com and example.org are maintained for documentation purposes. These domains may be used as illustrative examples in documents without prior coordination with us.
